DUNYA MIKHAIL

#dunyamikhail is an #iraqipoet who is renowned for her subversive, innovative, and satirical poetry. After graduation from the University of Baghdad, she worked as a journalist and translator for the Baghdad Observer. Facing censorship and interrogation, she left Iraq, first to Jordan and then to America ( #Detroit ). Her first book in English The War Works Hard (translated by Elizabeth Winslow) was shortlisted for Griffin and named one of “Twenty-Five Books to Remember from 2005” by the #NewYorkPublicLibrary. Diary of A Wave Outside the Sea won the Arab American Book Award.
Her newest book The Beekeeper: Rescuing the Stolen Women of Iraq (co-translated with Max Weiss) is in the National Book Award longlist, selected by The New York Times as a #highlyrecommendedbook . Her other books include The Iraqi Nights (translated by Kareem James Abu-Zeid) and 15 Iraqi Poets (editor). In an NPR interview, Mikhail said, “I feel that poetry is not medicine- it’s an X-ray. It helps you see the wound and understand it. We all feel alienated because of this continued violence in the world. We feel alone, but we feel also together. So we resort to poetry as a possibility for survival. However, to say I survived is not so final. We wake up to find that the war survived with us.” Her poem #thewarworkshard is a must read. Today marks the 6th anniversary of the #ranaplaza building collapse disaster near #dhaka #bangladesh where 1100 people died and over 2500 were injured... mostly young girls and women. Since that time there has been an accord on fire safety but that’s under threat. Despite *some* outcry at the time of the collapse, the #fashionindustry is back to business as usual and is culpable for #fastfashion in a world of such stark inequality. This matters to me since most of the clothes we buy in the US are made in Bangladesh. Costs are kept down for us to consume at their expense. This is a #feminist issue that affects #woc globally.

I don’t have all the answers - though my friend @chaumtoli has been doing a lot of work in this space.

Everything is a mirror that reflect back to us where we are ‘trapped’, but to realise we are trap or not, we need to be radically honest to ourselves. We need to go to a point where we are aware of our own denials, blindness. If we really wanna make progress and grow, then we need to come to space of self honesty,admitting where we really are. As long as we can’t acknowledge how we really feel, what we really think, where we really are in terms of state of mind and feelings, deluding ourselves just to make us feel better about ourselves, living in a self deception,defending ourselves just in order to be right, we are stuck and not really making any progress. 🦄

When we can be radically honest to ourselves, then our perception about triggers will shift. Without triggers we wouldn’t know what exactly we need to transform or where we really are in our journey. Our unconscious and subconscious mind are deep as the ocean, and without triggers our conscious mind won’t be aware. Practice daily meditation to grow in higher awareness, so that we can actually see what is really going on within our psyche and work on that level, instead of always getting trapped in a state of blaming, overpowered by thoughts and emotional patterns that leads to certain behaviours that hinder our highest evolution, hating ourselves, feeling guilty for not doing the right things, or trying to control our outer reality. Real progress happens through inner transformation, and we shall see real change in our external reality. Triggers are our best friend 💜💜

“Imprinted Bride” from my “Malabar Bride” series from 2005. I made drawings from my old wedding photographs and and collaged them with photographic interiors, images from teaching posters, animals from coloring books. The moment this gesture captures is a sacred moment in a wedding ritual. While making work like this is farther away, reimagining rituals is part of my daily practice. .
